Penam Periodontics - Evidence based Personalized Periodontics

Systemic Disease and Implants.

Whilst there are many research papers describing possible associations between implant loss and systemic disease, no studies comparing patients with and without the condition in a controlled setting have been published. For diabetes, osteoporosis and the bisphosphonate drugs used to treat osteoporosis, there are studies, but these cannot be compared to provide us with a proper conclusion. Currently there is no unequivocal tendency for subjects with diabetes, osteoporosis or those taking bisphosphonates to have higher implant failure rates. The level of evidence indicative of absolute and relative contraindications for implant therapy due to systemic diseases is currently low. If you have uncontrolled diabetes or have been on intravenous bisphosphonates we will discuss your options.
